How do we cope and reduce stress? The answer, according to a new survey from the American Psychological Association, is that we’re not doing enough.

Fewer people are using stress-reduction techniques to cope with stress, according to an annual survey released Wednesday. Of the methods asked about — from exercise to reading to praying to shopping — nearly all were used less this year than in 2008. Many people are turning to sedentary methods, such as listening to music or eating.

To have declined since the financial crisis hit last year, according to the study. The study, conducted by Harris Interactive, surveyed 1,568 adults across the U.S. Only 42% said their stress levels had increased in the past year, compared with 47% in 2008. Symptoms of stress, from irritability to fatigue and teeth grinding, were also lower this year.
